Nearly 200 Marshall University supporters, including members of West Virginia’s congressional delegation, joined Marshall’s president, athletic director and football and basketball coaches at the nation’s capital June 21 to celebrate the University’s recent growth and expansion projects now under way.
The crowd, which included many Big Green members, gathered during Marshall’s annual State of the University address and reception at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. The Newseum is an interactive museum of news located at 555 Pennsylvania Ave.
West Virginia University will again pay tribute to the contribution of coal miners in our state with a Miner's Day Program to be held on Monday, December 6th at 7:00pm in the Mountainlair Gold Ballroom.
The program will feature Mr. Fred Powers, a retired miner/school teacher, who will share personal stories of the coalfields in a theatrical context. The program, titled "Under These Hills: A Coal Miner's Story", will take you miles underneath our world into the hidden realm of the coal miner. For this program, Powers was selected as the recipient of the Coal Heritage Award for Excellence in the Arts presented by the Coal Heritage Highway Authority and National Coal Heritage Area to honor local efforts to preserve and interpret our coal history throughout the National Coal Heritage Area and along the Coal Heritage Trail.

East Hartford, CT (November 15, 2010) – RSL Fiber Systems, LLC, an East Hartford, Conn.-based developer of advanced lighting solutions and integrated illumination systems, is moving aggressively to expand beyond its military roots into a wide variety of high-demand commercial lighting applications. And one of its first official steps into this arena is establishment of a new business development initiative designed to introduce the company’s revolutionary technology to commercial markets.
RSL Fiber Systems LLC is shedding new light on an old problem. The East Hartford-headquartered light maker, founded in 2001, designs and manufactures advanced illumination systems that seek to overcome the limitations of traditional lighting.
“RSL uses an innovative technology to solve traditional problems in more effective ways,” says Tony Allen, vice chairman, Connecticut Technology Council board, which named RSL the fastest growing company in the advanced manufacturing category of its Marcum Tech Top 40 awards program.
Gov. Joe Manchin today announced his appointment of C.A. Phillips to serve as acting director of the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training (MHST). Phillips replaces Ron Wooten, who served as director of MHST since 2006. Wooten’s resignation is effective Nov. 3, 2010.
“C.A. Phillips is recognized throughout the mining community as a strong leader and a man who cares deeply about mine safety,” said Gov. Manchin. “His leadership and experience will make this a smooth transition for the agency, its employees and the mining industry.”
