RSL Fiber Systems (RSLFS) developed and manufactures an exclusive, fiber optic-based light transport system, referred to as Remote Source Lighting that efficiently transports high-intensity light via non-electric fiber optic cable to a passive light-emitting device (called a luminaire) up to 1000 feet or more away. RSLFS’s advanced fiber optic lighting technology provides several important solutions for challenging Mining and Mine Safety applications, solving many difficult and demanding real-world problems.

RSL Fiber Systems uses high quality, efficient light sources and fiber optic cables to deliver bright light significantly farther than regular fiber-cable. In common plastic fiber optic lighting systems, the maximum distance is typically only 50 feet. With RSLFS’s compact, portable, lightweight system, transmission distances are greatly extended – to over 1000 feet. Brightness and application flexibility are maximized, and the light can be safely utilized in many ingenious and effective ways to meet operational and crisis Mining & Mine Safety applications.

There are several important Mining and Mine Safety challenges and applications that RSLFS can address:

1.    Hazardous or Explosive Environments – applications in dangerous locations, or where flammable or explosive fuels or material spills are present, need high-intensity, directed light – but it is important to keep the hot, electrical, and potentially spark-generating light source remote from the hazardous application areas.
Mine Workers and Safety Personnel can enter an affected area with RSLFS’ small, cool solid-state luminaire (local light reflecting fixture) connected to a lightweight length of fiber optic cable – with the high- output illuminator (light source) located safely over 1000 feet away.

Being di-electric, the fiber optic cable can be laid in water or muddy locations without fear of electrocution.  The system can be located at strategic points within a mine – or packaged in a small portable transit case
for emergency deployment.

RSLFS’s systems can also drive high levels of light through multiple fibers to different locations from a single, remote, controllable high-intensity light generation source.

2.    Loss of Light in an Emergency or Disaster Scenario can be a significant problem in Mining applications. Using a small remote generator or battery system, RSLFS systems can quickly supply needed emergency lighting – especially to remote locations. The systems can be stored and quickly deployed.
 The hot, electrical light source is situated remotely – safely outside the immediate disaster area.
 Responders can enter spaces where dangerous fumes exist. Using a flexible, powerful, di-electric light tethered to a small fiber-cable, the area can be safely searched.

3.    Search and Rescue Operations – In a mine accident, search teams need to get flexible, high-intensity light quickly into very small areas (crevices, holes, cracks, etc.). RSLFS’s systems can address this need by providing multiple, small, flexible, and

lightweight illumination capabilities – with the light source remaining safely remote.
    RSLFS’ non-electric fiber optic cable can be fed through a small ventilation hole without risk of explosion or electrocution. This can be a vital first step in ensuring personnel are safely located and rescued.
    Triage or helicopter landing areas can be set up and quickly lit with side emitting fiber that is easy to see.     The same cables and light fixtures can provide different colors to signal different conditions, e.g. Red for
Danger; Green for Safe, etc.
4.    Sound and Pollution Reduction – electrical generators for remote lighting applications can be placed at a distance, eliminating noise and carbon monoxide pollution of the areas of Mining operation.
5.    Installation Flexibility – Di-electric fiber optic cables and luminaires can be laid in rain, snow, mud, or standing water without degradation and without risk of electric shock.
6.    Shock & Vibration – Mining applications often involve high levels of shock and vibration, resulting in undue maintenance with traditional lighting. RSLFS systems are shock-test

ed to the highest military requirements. The solid-state luminaire and cable can withstand a high amount of abuse for long periods of time.
7.    EMI/RFI Reduction – unlike traditional lighting systems, RSLFS’ fiber optic designs are ideal for use in wireless communications areas as they do not emit EMI, RFI, or other signals to interfere with these devices.
8.    Reduced Maintenance & Downtime     In RSL systems, the light-emitting luminaire is a passive device requiring no maintenance or
replacement
    The light-generating unit (illuminator) can be located remotely in an easy-to-access maintenance location for quick, safe, and easy replacement
