A Letter from Congressman Rahall
Wednesday, August 25, 2010

After the Sago and Alma tragedies, this consortium was formed to harness the decades of experience, skill, and know-how in the West Virginia coal fields.

With my support, the Congress has provided the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) with the funding and mandate to collaborate with small businesses, in order to develop and improve the technology and training that will save miners' lives. In cooperation with state agencies, West Virginia businesses are primed to be leaders in this field.

Yours is a unique opportunity to pursue new markets and economic opportunities, while advancing a noble and proud industry that rightfully takes pride in its contribution to the strength and success of the American nation.

I hope this meeting proves to be beneficial and informative.

Sincerely,

NICK J. RAHALL, II
Chairman Committee on Natural Resources

Charleston Works Miner Apprentice Class Questionnaire
Friday, August 13, 2010

The Mine Safety Technology Consortium and Charleston works are considering offering a miner certification program at the Schoenbaum Family Enrichment Center located at 1701 5th Avenue in Charleston. This program would be 11 weeks in length and participants would receive certifications in underground mining, surface mining, OSHA 10, OSHA 30, CPR, AED, and First Aid.

We are seeking input from the community to determine interest and feasibility. We are asking for potential participants to participate in a brief survey to measure the level of interest for the proposed program.
