MSTC to partner with regional organizations

The Mine Safety Technology Consortium (MSTC) and the Women’s Business and Training Center are partnering to offer a series of small business development courses focusing on business plan development, financing, and marketing. The focus of the series is to offer a low-cost, high-quality training and skill development to aspiring entrepreneurs and existing small businesses.
Dennis Jarvis, II Director of the Mine Safety Technology Consortium stated “We are pleased to offer this series of educational training seminars during the economic uncertainty we are facing. Encouraging growth in the small business sector is the key to rebuilding the foundations of our economy.”
“Providing an outlet for existing small business to develop new skills and enhance existing skills is important to our organization”, commented Tara Elder, Center Director of the Women’s Business and Training Center, “ our hope is to work with any interested business to ensure a solid future for their growth. We are also planning to provide follow-up one-on-one business coaching as requested.”
Courses will be offered during November in Montgomery, West Virginia at the Upper Kanawha Valley Community Technology Building at 326 Third Avenue starting on Monday November 3, 2008.
Business Planning & Finance presented on Monday, Nov. 3rd from 10am to 1pm – Want to get your business idea off to the right start? Attend our Business Planning and Financing class where you will learn how to research, plan and develop a business plan that you can take to the bank. You will also learn how to prepare a budget and other financial data required to determine the feasibility of your idea.

Basic Accounting with QuickBooks presented on Mon. and Tues., Nov. 10th & 11th from 5:30pm to 9pm - Take charge of your book keeping and better understand your business finances today! Topics include: measuring business profitability; track cost of goods sold; enter and write checks; tracking payroll liabilities; using registers; invoicing customers; tracking and paying sales tax; and customizing reports.
Sessions will be conducted in a computer lab to facilitate hands-on instruction. Class is limited to 12 people.

The classes will be offered in conjunction with the Community and Technical College at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology and upon successful completion of 15 hours of course work, participants are eligible to apply for credit hours towards an Entrepreneurship Certificate at the Community and Technical College @ Tech.
The Mine Safety Technology Consortium is a public private partnership involving business owners, industry, government leaders, and educational professionals. MSTC is a principal component of a parent project currently under way at Marshall University’s Center for Environmental, Geotechnical, and Applied Sciences and is supported by a $2 million grant for the federal Economic Development Administration and the assistance of Congressman Nick J Rahall, II. MSTC was created to support three main objectives: address mine safety and health, economic development and job creation in West Virginia. The MSTC steering committee is chaired jointly by Dr. Beverly Jo Harris, president, the CTC @ WVU Tech, Mine Safety Technology Consortium set to partner with regional organizations to offer small business development educational seminars and Dr. Tony Szwilski, director of CEGAS at Marshall University. Other members of the consortium include: Department of Mining Engineers at West Virginia University; Arch Coal; West Virginia Coal Association; Consol Energy; West Virginia Development Office; International Coal Group; Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing; West Virginia Manufacturers Association; ISR Inc.; United Mine Workers of America; Office of Miner’s Health, Safety and Training.
